Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI), the country’s largest two-wheeler manufacturer, is planning to launch its first electric vehicle in the coming fiscal year.
According to a top company official, the company which sells popular models such as the Activa and Shine in the country plans to begin a feasibility run with its dealer partners at the end of the festive season this year.
HMSI President, Managing Director, and CEO Atsushi Ogata told PTI that the company decided to enter the segment after a thorough discussion with its parent company, Honda Motor Company in Japan.
He claimed that many companies, including international players, were entering the EV market because the government favored green infrastructure investments.
Customers have begun to use EVs for short commutes in city environments, but internal combustion engine two-wheelers still have an advantage for long-distance travel and rural areas, according to Ogata.
The government’s push for clean technologies in the automotive sector has sparked a lot of interest in the electric vehicle (EV) segment in the country.
