Reliance Jio remains the largest teleco by active user base

According to data by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd. remained India’s largest telecom operator by active subscribers for the fifth time in a row. Bharti Airtel added more regularly paying users than Jio for the first time in five months. The data released by TRAI pertains to November 2021.

Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel have reported a steady gain in wireless customer gains, largely at the expense of Vodafone Idea. India’s user base has climbed up by 1.2 million in November to 1.167 billion, partly with the help of Jio and Airtel while Vodafone Idea continued to suffer losses, unable to offset the impact of sharp hikes in base prepaid tariffs.

Reliance Jio added 2.01 million wireless customers in November, taking its gross user base to 428.61 million, its rural mobile user base grew to 185.89 million. Reliance has widened its customer market base to 36.71%.

Bharti Airtel added 1.31 million additional customers to reach a gross user base to 355.29 million, its rural user base reached 171.32 million. Its market share increased to 30.43%.

Compared to these two, Vodafone Idea has shown poor performance as it seems unable to combat its two financially strong rivals. It lost 1.89 million customers which reduced its total user base to 267.12 million. Its rural user base dipped down to 135.29 million. All in all, its market share fell to 22.88% from 23.07%.
